چکیده

This investigation was carried out at the Madeira River basin, located in the state of Rondônia, Brazilian Amazon. Fish from Madeira, Jaciparaná, and Jamari rivers between 7 and 11° parallels south and between 62 and 65° meridians west in Rondônia state, Brazil, were sampled and chemically analyzed for mercury in order to evaluate if the inputs of this metal into the food-chain is occurring in levels reaching values above those recommended by the World Health Organization. This is because such an element is very dangerous when ingested by humans and its presence was extensively identified some years ago in the area, since it was utilized as an amalgam in processes for recovering alluvial gold.

Mutagenic effects of mercury pollution as revealed by micronucleus test on three Amazonian fish species.

Genotoxic effect of mercury pollution over Amazonian fish species was evaluated by using the micronucleus test (MNT). Distinct mean frequencies of micronuclei (MN) were observed in three trophically distinct characin fish species collected in two riverine environments in the Amazon Basin: the Madeira (polluted area) and the Solimões (unpolluted area) rivers. Mean frequencies of MN observed in P...

The Influence of Changes in Lifestyle and Mercury Exposure in Riverine Populations of the Madeira River (Amazon Basin) near a Hydroelectric Project

In the Amazon Basin, naturally occurring methylmercury bioaccumulates in fish, which is a key source of protein consumed by riverine populations. The hydroelectric power-plant project at Santo Antônio Falls allows us to compare the Hg exposure of riverine populations sparsely distributed on both sides of the Madeira river before the area is to be flooded. From 2009 to 2011, we concluded a popul...

Segmental hair mercury evaluation of a single family along the upper Madeira basin, Brazilian Amazon.

Mercury pollution (MeHg) up the aquatic food chains in the Amazonian ecosystems has been a major concern in environmental health. Riverside people (ribeirinhos) along the Upper Madeira river are heavy fish eaters. Hair is the best biomarker for MeHg exposure. By assuming a constant hair growth rate, it is possible to evaluate a temporal profile of Hg exposure over the recent defined past. In th...

Late quaternary dynamics in the Madeira River basin, southern Amazonia (Brazil), as revealed by paleomorphological analysis.

Ancient drainage systems are being increasingly documented in the Amazon basin and their characterization is crucial for reconstructing fluvial evolution in this area. Fluvial morphologies, including elongate belts, are well preserved along the Madeira River. Digital Elevation Model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission favored the detection of these features even where they are covered by ...

Hair mercury levels in Amazonian populations: spatial distribution and trends

BACKGROUND Mercury is present in the Amazonian aquatic environments from both natural and anthropogenic sources. As a consequence, many riverside populations are exposed to methylmercury, a highly toxic organic form of mercury, because of their intense fish consumption. Many studies have analysed this exposure from different approaches since the early nineties. This review aims to systematize t...
